The practice of mindfulness in the classroom brings important benefits for our students in pre-school and primary school: it improves their attention in schoolwork and a greater awareness of their emotions. Mindfulness has its origins in Eastern meditation practices and in the ability of people to concentrate on what is happening in the present.
Among the countless benefits that this practice can bring to our classes is the control and management of the child’s emotions, the awareness of the here and now instead of the usual ‘autopilot’ and the increase of their attention span. Achieving mindfulness in the student helps the teacher to manage stress effectively, as it provides the teacher with the appropriate tools to reduce it.
The student, for his part, learns to regulate his emotions – his brain gains in full attention – learns to calmly address the teacher and his classmates by reducing his stress level and improves his concentration and attention in the classroom, which translates into an improvement in his school performance.
